Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Early in the morning, we'll transfer to the Machame Park Gate (5,950 ft), where we’ll begin our climb through the lush forest with its symphony of sights and sounds engulfing us. Around every corner, is an unexpectedly pleasant surprise, whether it’s exotic birds chirping in perfect harmony in the canopy above, or the playful black & white colobus monkeys peeking mischieviously at us from around the trees. We'll make our way to an overnight camp at Machame Camp (9,850 feet), just above the forest zone.
Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Today we continue our ascent. We walk without hurry today allowing us to acclimatize to the changing terrain and to breathe in the panoramic views that are stretching out to greet us. Our path is noted for its signature attributes of being intriguing and rocky, with a few well-positioned concrete steps set into the hill to aid our ascent. Throughout the day, our path promises to faithfully point us in the right direction as we cross many ridges to behold the splendor of the climb that is uniquely Kilimanjaro.
Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
The first part of our trek today is gentle, followed by a steady uphill climb with boulders to be navigated. We reach Lava Tower around noon, where we stop for lunch. You can’t help but be awestruck by the beauty that comes with being at the highest point of today's walk. From Lava Tower, we trek downward for about 2 hours, enjoying the marvels of nature along the way.
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp
We start the day crossing a small stream before we start scrambling up the Barranco Wall. The wall is steep and we have to use our hands to steady us, but the climb is very pleasant. The views from the top of the wall are breathtaking. If you look up you can see Kibo with the Heim Glacier looming above. Looking down, you can see the Barranco Valley and our camp site. Our trail takes us up and down until we descend into a lush green valley with a gentle stream running through it. We’ll stop to take in the beauty and then climb the steep hill to reach our next camp.
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Valley Camp
Day 6: Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp
Today is a short but steep uphill climb at the start and end. We continue our climb across barren landscape with lots of boulders and shattered rocks. It is very quiet and peaceful with the glaciers in view. We will follow a very steep ridge until we reach a rocky section for some more scrambling. Later we reach our camp amidst large rocks with dangerous cliff-faces. Tonight we will go to bed early (7pm) as the wake-up call is 11pm for the summit hike to the peak.
Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp
After midnight we start the challenging Hike for the Summit. You begin at 12:30 to 1am, passing between glaciers to the rim at Stella Point. Here temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight. As dawn nears, we'll summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet. We'll then descend back to Barafu Camp, resting for a while before continuing our descent to Mweka Camp
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
Day 8: Mweka Camp to KIA Lodge
