The gorge is the site of years of tireless research into the anthropology of early man by the famous Leakey family and prominent universities. The museum is situated on the site of archaeological digs taking place throughout this, and the last, century. The site was made famous by the Leakey’s and some of the amazing hominid finds such as Australopithecus bosei or “Nutcracker Man” (because of his very large teeth and jaws) and Homo habilis (a hominid named for his handy abilities with tools found around the site). We then trek onwards to the Serengeti National Park, game driving and stopping for a picnic along the way. We arrive at our camp in the Seronera area in time for a shower before dinner.

Days 7-8: Serengeti National Park
These days are devoted to full game drives with many opportunities to get that “perfect shot” with your camera. The Serengeti is one of the most stunning wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The name comes from the Maasai word “siri nget” meaning “endless plains”. This vast savannah hosts the world’s largest surviving concentration of endless plains. In addition to the short grasses, there are beautiful rocky out-cropping called kopjes and thousands of acres of bush and acacia woodland. In the Central Serengeti, known as the Seronera, there is a plentiful supply of water which lures the big cats and elephants during the dry season; it’s the perfect spot for taking pictures and for our picnic lunch. We continue northward to explore the changing eco-systems and search for wildlife including lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, antelopes and soaring eagles. At the end of each day, we return to our camp for a night of rest.
